ISGS Assists with Hydraulic Fracturing Legislation in Illinois
The Illinois General Assembly and the Illinois Governor passed and signed the Illinois Hydraulic Fracturing Regulatory Act in June 2013. The final bill was drafted through a collaborative effort by environmental activists, industry representatives, and state regulatory and enforcement authorities. The ISGS provided scientific advisement to produce what is described as one of the toughest regulatory acts for hydraulic fracturing in the United States. The ISGS participated in the yearlong process at meetings where the Act was being drafted as well as through briefings of the Attorney General’s staff and legislators of both the Illinois House and Senate. Issues discussed related to potential induced seismicity, drilling practices, and results of contamination studies from other parts of the country. The Act defines continued involvement of the ISGS in additional writing of regulatory practices and periodic reports reviewing the latest scientific findings on these issues.
