His research areas include the distribution and fate of trace metals in recent sediments of lakes and rivers, water quality of natural and created wetlands, determination of sedimentation rates and patterns using cesium-137 and lead-210, Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis of environmental and geologic materials, and natural radioactivity measurement and risk assessment. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (since 1972), the American Chemical Society's Environmental, Chemical Health & Safety Divisions, the Society of Wetland Scientists, Sigma XI, the Geochemical Society, the Chemical Heritage Foundation International Association for Great Lakes Research, the American Geophysical Union, Lake Michigan Federation, and the International Association on Water Quality. Rich has been with the ISGS since 1974.
