ISGS Online Map Series

ISGS maps are published in a variety of series, differentiated primarily by level of review. Those map series that are available online are described below. Additional maps, not part of the online map series, may be available in other ISGS Publications.

STATEMAP
Available for purchase through Shop ISGS.
STATEMAP 1:24,000-scale geologic maps were produced with U.S. Geological Survey funds matched by the ISGS. They typically include only bedrock and surficial geology themes and are produced within a one-year timeframe. STATEMAP products are available only as downloadable graphics through this website, and all will eventually be upgraded to the Illinois Preliminary Geologic Map (IPGM) or the Illinois Geologic Quadrangle (IGQ) Series. They comply with ISGS cartographic standards at the time of public release, but have not been formally reviewed.

EDMAP
Available free for download only.
The EDMAP program supports geologic mapping by students of Illinois universities and is funded in part by the U.S. Geological Survey. These student maps are made available as a courtesy to the participating universities, and are available only as downloadable graphics through this Web site. EDMAP products provide students and faculty with a means to permanently reference their mapping efforts and to further encourage Illinois' academic institutions to participate in this worthwhile educational program. These maps, although published by the ISGS, do not necessarily comply with ISGS cartographic standards and are not subject to formal ISGS review.

The USGS EDMAP program provides for: 1) broad education in geologic mapping and field analysis through the support of field studies, 2) development of academic programs that teach earth science students the fundamental principles of geologic mapping and field analysis, and 3) training the next generation of geologic mappers.

Competitive grants are written annually by academic institutions, and university dollars are matched with Federal dollars. Proposals are reviewed by a panel consisting of university representatives, geologic discipline scientists, a contract representative, and a state geologist. EDMAP is integrated with Federal (FEDMAP) and State (STATEMAP) components of the program. Since 1995, EDMAP has funded hundreds of students from well over 100 universities in the United States. The maximum funding per graduate student is $15,000.00 and undergraduate student is $7,500.00.

Illinois Preliminary Geologic Map Series (IPGM)
This series was created for preliminary geologic maps of various scales and themes, such as surficial geology, bedrock geology, drift thickness, bedrock topography, and others. IPGM maps receive a brief internal scientific review and may not conform to ISGS cartographic standards. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site. This series is no longer used for new publications.

Illinois Geologic Quadrangle Map Series (IGQ)
This series includes 1:24,000-scale maps of a variety of geologic themes such as surficial geology, bedrock geology, drift thickness, bedrock topography, and others. IGQ maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards at the time of public release. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Illinois County Geologic Map Series (ICGM)This series includes county maps of a variety of geologic themes, primarily at 1:100,000 scale. These maps may be a compilation of maps previously published at 1:24,000 scales. ICGM maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Illinois Map Series (I-Map)
The I-Map series includes maps of a variety of geologic themes covering the entire state or a region of the state. These maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards. They are available for sale as paper copies; some are available as downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Open File Series (OFS)
The Open File Series includes primarily county maps at scales less than 1:24,000 and of various geologic themes. OFS maps received brief internal scientific review and conformed to ISGS standards at the time of release. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site. This series is no longer used for new publications.

Coal Map Series
Several classes of coal-related maps are available at county and statewide scales. These include coal geology, coal quality, coal mining, and others. Although some maps are available only for sale and in print format, many are offered as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.
