ISGS Library Collections

The ISGS library consists of two components: the stacks and the map room. The main focus of the ISGS Library and map collections is Illinois geology. Subject areas collected in the stacks include geology, geophysics, geochemistry, paleontology, energy and fuels, stratigraphy, mines and minerals, hydrogeology, and environmental geology. The map room collection includes both work maps and published maps.

Stacks

    Documents - A large collection of reports and serials issued by state geological surveys; U.S. Geological Survey, Bureau of Mines, and other federal agencies; Canadian geological surveys. A complete collection of ISGS publications and publications of other agencies of the State of Illinois.
    Periodicals - More than 200 current journal and newsletter titles; over 300 titles in the collection, some dating to the 1800s.
    Special Collections - Manuscripts; theses; database on Illinois geology; vertical file; microforms; Superconducting Super Collider archives and database.
    Books - Over 4,000 books covering many subject areas.
    Video Recordings - Professionally and internally produced video tapes and DVDs, including recordings of ISGS "Understanding Our Earth Scientific Seminars".

Map Room

    Maps - More than 25,000 maps are housed in the Map Room: topographic maps of Illinois and surrounding states; U.S. Geological Survey map series; other published and unpublished maps of Illinois, including work maps for ISGS publications.
    Special Collections - Original field notes, some indexed; aerial photographs of Illinois including annual oversize aerial photos of the Lake Michigan shoreline beginning in 1956; historical photographs of research projects and staff; videos and slides.
