ISGS Online Map Series

ISGS maps are published in a variety of series, differentiated primarily by level of review. Those map series that are available online are described below.

Illinois Preliminary Geologic Map Series (IPGM)
This series was created for preliminary geologic maps of various scales and themes, such as surficial geology, bedrock geology, drift thickness, bedrock topography, and others. IPGM maps receive a brief internal scientific review and may not conform to ISGS cartographic standards. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site. This series is no longer used for new publications.

Illinois Geologic Quadrangle Map Series (IGQ)
This series includes 1:24,000-scale maps of a variety of geologic themes such as surficial geology, bedrock geology, drift thickness, bedrock topography, and others. IGQ maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards at the time of public release. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Illinois County Geologic Map Series (ICGM)
This series includes county maps of a variety of geologic themes, primarily at 1:100,000 scale. These maps may be a compilation of maps previously published at 1:24,000 scales. ICGM maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Illinois Map Series (I-Map)
The I-Map series includes maps of a variety of geologic themes covering the entire state or a region of the state. These maps are peer reviewed and conform to ISGS standards. They are available for sale as paper copies; some are available as downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Open File Series (OFS)
The Open File Series includes primarily county maps at scales less than 1:24,000 and of various geologic themes. OFS maps received brief internal scientific review and conformed to ISGS standards at the time of release. They are available for sale as paper copies and as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site. This series is no longer used for new publications.

Coal Map Series
Several classes of coal-related maps are available at county and statewide scales. These include coal geology, coal quality, coal mining, and others. Although some maps are available only for sale and in print format, many are offered as free downloadable PDF files through the ISGS Web site.

Oil and Gas Map Series (ILOIL)
The Illinois Oil and Gas Resources Web mapping project enables online access to a petroleum database of over 180,000 Illinois well records.
