Illinois Coastal Management Grant Awarded to ISGS

ISGS Receives Illinois Coastal Management Grant

Governor Pat Quinn announced the 26 awardees of the second round of Illinois Coastal Management Grants on Saturday April 19 at the Oak Street Beach, Chicago. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources-sponsored grant program is funded by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Lisa Anderson and Cindy Briedis, of the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), Prairie Research Institute, were present for the announcement and will receive a grant award.

In partnership with the Chicago Park District, the ISGS project Chicago Lakefront Parks—Outreach and Public Education, will provide two attractive publications for Burnham Park and Lincoln Park in Chicago that blend the geology and cultural aspects of the parks. An educational display and a fall public field trip are also a part of the project. With the support of the Illinois Science Teachers Association, a teachers-only field trip to Burnham Park will be provided during the National Science Teachers Association meeting in Chicago in March of 2015. The goals of the project are to encourage Illinois residents and tourists to appreciate the park from perspectives that may not be immediately obvious, including its geology and coastal processes, and to encourage public access, nature-based recreation, and environmental education.
