Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

    Title:
GeoTIFF Image of the Surficial Geology of the Alton Quadrangle (Illinois portion), Madison County, Illinois
    Abstract:
This metadata file describes a GeoTIFF image of the surficial geological units of the 7.5-minute Alton quadrangle in Illinois. The image is limited to the quadrangle portion of the map sheet.

The data were published in 1999 on an ISGS Illinois Geologic Quadrangle entitled Surficial Geology Map, Alton Quadrangle (Illinois Portion) Madison County, Illinois by David Grimley. These data do not include all the information on the published map. Refer to the published map for a complete explanation of the Quaternary geology of the Alton quadrangle.

    The nominal scale is 1:24,000.

Why was the data set created?

This image is intended to provide a regional overview of the extent of Quaternary geologic materials in the Alton quadrangle. The image is not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base, nor does it replace the need for detailed site-specific studies.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1999 (process 1 of 1)
    none

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

    No attribute accuracy report.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

    No horizontal positional accuracy report.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

    No vertical positional accuracy report.

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

No completeness report. Mapping techniques are described on the published map.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

The TIFF image was automatically produced by CorelDraw 9 software. The georeferencing data was added uisng ESRI ArcCatalog 8.1.
