Detailed List Of Files Data Product Contents -------------------------- This zip file includes digital data pertaining to a map of the surficial geology of the Alton 7.5-minute (1:24,000-scale) quadrangle in Madison County, Illinois. The data portray: - surficial geologic units and contacts - loess thickness contours - geologic cross-sections - data points for stratigraphic test holes, outcrops, ISGS field notes, water wells, and engineering borings - figures, images and text from the published map A detailed list of the digital files included in this product can be found at the end of this document. The data are provided in various digital forms: - ArcInfo 7x/8x coverage in export/interchange format - ArcView 3x legend - ArcView 3x project - ArcView 3x/8x shape file - ArcView 3x/8x projection file - GeoTIFF image - TIFF georeferencing file for ArcView 3x and ArcInfo 7x/8x - JPEG/JFIF image - MS Word document - dBase data file - metadata in FGDC HTML FAQ format - metadata in FGDC HTML outline format - metadata in FGDC text outline format - metadata in ESRI XML format Funding for this project was provided by the STATEMAP quadrangle mapping program, a cooperative agreement between the State of Illinois and the U.S. Geological Survey. Technical Requirements ---------------------- The GIS data can be used in any GIS software compatible with the ESRI shape file (.shp) or coverage export file (.e00) formats. It is recommended that ArcView 3x or ArcGIS 8x software are used to view and manipulate the data. Most Internet browsers and graphics software are compatible with the TIFF and JPEG image formats. Other digital files in the product are compatible with typical PC desktop software. It is assumed that those who wish to download, unzip and use these data are technically proficient in using the Internet, file zipping software, and GIS software. The ISGS will entertain questions about the data, but will not provide support of any kind in regard to the use of the Internet or any particular software package. How To Use This Product File ---------------------------- Place the downloaded zip file in a directory of choice and unzip the file. It will create a directory with the same name as the zip file. Open the *.apr file in ArcView 3x or import it into ArcMap 8x. Explore the data. Read the metadata. View the JPEG images from the published map. Disclaimer ---------- The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides these geographic data "as is." Spatial Reference Information ----------------------------- Vector data in this product file are in geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude) in units of decimal degrees, and in the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Raster data (GeoTIFF images) in this product file are in the UTM coordinate system, zone 15, units of meters, North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27).
