Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Illinois State Geological Survey Publication_Date: 199108 Title: Woodfordian Moraines of Illinois Edition: 20040422 Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Series_Information: Series_Name: ISGS GIS Database Issue_Identification: GISDB_QTGEO.IL_Moraines_Py Publication_Information: Publication_Place: Champaign, Illinois Publisher: Illinois State Geological Survey Online_Linkage: http://www.isgs.illinois.edu/ Online_Linkage: http://illinois.edu Description: Abstract: This is an SDE polygon feature class containing named Woodfordian moraines, or Wisconsinan end moraines, of Illinois. Scale is 1:500,000. The primary source for the data is ISGS Bulletin 94, Pleistocene Stratigraphy of Illinois, Willman and Frye, 1970. Most of the Woodfordian sublobes left a succession of moraines, indicating a pulsing retreat of the ice. The data include the name of each moraine. Purpose: Coverage created as part of the geologic GIS database at the ISGS to provide automated end moraine information. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines. Supplemental_Information: Recent updates to the data: In April 2004 edition 1.1 of the data set was transitioned to storage in an Oracle RDBMS using the ArcSDE geodatabase model. The result (this version) is designated Edition 20040422. Edition 1.0 of these data were reviewed for internal logical consistency in June, 1998. As a result, COVER-ID values were recalculated to be unique, and five polygons were deleted. See logical consistency report and process steps for June, 1998 for more details. The updated data set was designated edition 1.1. Some changes and updates were made in June, 1998. See processing steps for details. There are no known polygon attribute values outside the appropriate value domains. Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon and chain-node topology was present in the source coverage. This data set was checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs, except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except for universal polygon), boundary values appropriate for map projection and map units, and appropriate "fuzzy" tolerances. The data set meets these parameters. Completeness_Report: Recent studies have shown that additional end moraines may be found on the land surface of Illinois. However, these have not been added to this feature class. The ISGS publication "Wedron and Mason Groups: Lithostratigraphic Reclassification...", Bulletin 104, Hansel and Johnson (1996) is a good source for information on subsequent developments in this regard. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal positional accuracy was verified in October, 1991 by manual overlay of source and hard-copy plots. Lines within one line-width of the source were deemed acceptable. Accuracy of the source with respect to the ground condition was not addressed in this review. Consult the primary source for such information. Lineage: Source_Information: Source_Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: H.B. Willman and John C. Review was limited to internal logical consistency of attribute items. Locations of features and accuracy of item values were not checked, except in cases where possible errors became apparent as a result of logical consistency checks. No checks were performed that involved plotting of hardcopy maps and manual overlay with source materials. Some changes were made, as follows: Deleted five polygons as per Ardith Hansel. They were named Harrisville (2 polys), Temperance Hill (1 poly), Atkinson (2 polys). There is a third Atkinson polygon that was not removed. The two removed were the westernmost pair. These polygons can be identified on the published paper map as the five that lay on the dashed line labeled "Boundary of Woodfordian glaciation", in the northwestern area of the map. New information indicates that these features should not be considered as Woodfordian moraines. A polygon was mis-labeled "La Mollie". The correct name is "La Moille". The correction was made. Cover-ids were recalculated to be unique.
