Description:
Abstract:
This data set is an ArcSDE raster mosaic of orthorectified color (3-band) aerial imagery for the UTM Zone 15 portion of the state of Illinois, collected as part of the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The data are stored in the "as delivered" spatial reference of UTM Zone 15, NAD83 with a 2-meter ground resolution.

The originator of the input image tiles is the USDA-FSA-APFO Aerial Photography Field Office.

The mosaic was constructed using georeferenced GeoTIFFs with ArcCatalog 9.1, ArcSDE 9.1 and Oracle 10g. They are stored in the SDE database with LZ77 (non-lossy) compression and exact pixel registration to the original images. Individual quarter-quadrangle image tiles overlapped with each other. The overlap areas were overwritten as additional tiles were mosaicked. The raster consumes 40 gigabytes in the SDE database and has 1.1 million database rows.

If viewed in ArcMap, the best rendering (i.e. most true to actual wavelength data) can be obtained by setting the symbology to use a maximum-minimum stretch (or no stretch). Do not set the display to use any kind of histogram function - this attempts to read every row from the database and will freeze your software.

NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental U.S. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availabilty of ortho imagery within a year of acquisition. NAIP provides two main products: 1 meter ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery rectified to a horizontal accuracy of within +/- 3 meters of reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQS) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP); and, 2 meter GSD ortho imagery rectified to within +/- 20 meters of reference DOQQs. The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 360 meter buffer on all four sides. NAIP quarter quads are rectified to the UTM coordinate system NAD83. NAIP imagery can obtain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile.

Purpose:
This raster can serve a variety of purposes, from interim maps to field references for earth science investigations and analysis. It is a useful GIS layer for comparison of gross changes in ground condition over time, and revision of digital line graphs and topographic maps.

These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set can serve as an important base cartographic element for many types of maps. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

The 2 meter GSD NAIP is intended as a source for current digital imagery in USDA Field Service Center GIS and for other programs that require imagery acquired during the agricultural growing season where high horizontal accuracy is not required.
