Points delineate the approximate location of shafts, slopes, drifts, pits, or tipples of individual mines (if known) or the general location of areas. Points have been compiled from a variety of sources. Points of areas mined before 1987 are commonly from source maps at scales of 1:62,500 or smaller and may only represent the approximate area of mining. Points of areas mined since 1987 are commonly digitized at scales ranging from 1:4800 to 1:12,000 and generally represent the location of shafts, slopes or tipples. The boundaries of the mine areas, if known are shown in the coverages COALMINES_PY and COALMINES_PY2. Attributes provided include identification number, type of mine, coal seam mined, and years of operation. Additional information is available from the Coal Section of the Illinois State Geological Survey. Purpose: Coverage created as part of the Critical Trends Assessment Project to provide information at a regional scale on areas affected by coal mining. These points are also published by the ISGS as 1:100,000 scale county maps. The data are suitable for use at a scale of 1:100,000 or smaller. Online_Linkage: Data Set Documentation Data_Quality_Information: Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Attribute accuracy has been reviewed by Coal Section personnel based on the best available information. Records of old mines (~pre-1950) are commonly incomplete or ambiguous. Logical_Consistency_Report: Point topology present. Completeness_Report: This data set does not represent a complete collection of the location of mine shafts, slopes, and other openings. Many mines had more than one point of entry, however this data set generally includes only one entry point per mine. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Horizontal positional accuracy is verified by visual comparison of source and hard copy plots. The source materials used are commonly paper copies (ozalid or hand traces) or microfilm prints of original mine maps supplied by mining companies or other parties. ISGS staff have not verified the accuracy or validity of the original source material. Some original maps are not drawn on a cartographic base. Due to the physical and cartographic quality of the source materials used, horizontal positions may be in error by 500 feet or more. For applications requiring precise horizontal accuracy, the original source maps should be consulted.
