<abstract>
This is the companion coverage to COALMINES_PY, showing
additional areas where there are several overlapping areas mined
for coal, updated to 1996. Most mapped coal mines are
depicted in the coverage COALMINES_PY. Use both of these
coverages together for a more complete representation of
areas mined for coal. This information was extracted from
detailed coal mine data stored in the ISGS Coal Section
library database. Lines delineate the approximate outer
boundary of individual mines (if known) or general mined
areas. Interior mine boundaries such as pillars or small
blocks of unmined coal are commonly not depicted. Outlines
have been compiled from a variety of sources. Outlines of
areas mined before 1987 are commonly from source maps at
scales of 1:62,500 or smaller. Outlines of areas mined since
1987 are commonly digitized at scales ranging from 1:4800 to
1:12,000. Mines whose extent is not known or which only mined
a few acres are not included in this coverage. Attributes
indicate mine identification number, mine type, mining method,
and status. Additional information is available from the
Coal Section of the Illinois State Geological Survey.
</abstract>
<purpose>
This coverage was compiled and updated between July 7
and December 31, 1996 in order to provide a current,
state-wide coverage showing surface/underground coal
mines for use with the ISGS Coal Industry Map (1996).
Due to the wide range of source map scales, this data
is suitable for regional applications only at the 1:100,000
scale or smaller.
</purpose>
<supplinf>
Coverages COALMINES_PY and COALMINES_PY2 replace the Coal Mine
Areas coverage that was distributed on the Illinois DNR CD-ROM
of Digital Datasets in Illinois (1996).

The data library from which this coverage was extracted was
updated with available information in 1996. The currentness
of the update source documents is largely dependent on the

<logic>
Polygon and chain-node topology is present. The coverage was
checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs,
except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except
for universal polygon), boundary values appropriate for map
projection and map units, and appropriate "fuzzy" tolerances.
There are no known arc or polygon attribute values outside
the appropriate value domains.

This data set does not represent a complete collection
of the location of mine shafts, slopes, and other openings.
Lines delineate the approximate outer boundary of
individual mines (if known) or general mined areas.
Interior mine boundaries such as pillars or small blocks
of unmined coal are commonly not depicted. Mines whose
extent is not known or which only mined a few acres are
not included in this coverage. The companion coverage
COALMINES_PY shows considerably more mined areas than this
coverage. This coverage and COALMINES_PY should be used
together for more complete representation of areas mined
for coal. Not all the attribute data available for these
coal mine locations are included in this coverage. For more
detailed information contact the Coal Section of the Illinois
State Geological Survey.

<posacc>
<horizpa>
<horizpar>
Horizontal positional accuracy is verified by visual
comparison of source and hard copy plots. The source
materials used are commonly paper copies (ozalid or
hand traces) or microfilm prints of original mine maps
supplied by mining companies or other parties. ISGS
staff have not verified the accuracy or validity of the
original source material. Some original maps are not
drawn on a cartographic base. Due to the physical and
cartographic quality of the source materials used,
horizontal positions may be in error by 500 feet or more.
For applications requiring precise horizontal accuracy,
the original source maps should be consulted.

Procedures Used:
These data are stored in county by county tiles in the ISGS
Coal Section GIS database. To prepare this coverage, coal mine
outlines from all county tiles containing this theme were joined.
Due to differing .pat item structures in the various county
tiles of the coal mine library, a multi-step UNION operation
was performed.

The following coal library coverages are those that contain
information for overlapping coal mines/seams used in this
coverage.

In order to UNION these coverages, item names and definitions
had to be altered to insure that no information was lost.
> To do this, the coverages were copied to the following:
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly200 mp059
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly220 mp259         2
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly999 mp959         3
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly200 mp0165        4
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly220 mp2165        5
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly999 mp9165        6
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly220 mp2183        7
> copy *path_name_suppressed*/mpoly250 mp5183        8

The number in the rightmost column above was used in the item
redefinitions to create a unique set of items for each
coverage. The polygon attribute items for the coverages
are listed below. For each coverage, the asterisk was replaced
with the corresponding number. For example, the asterisk would
be replaced by the number 3 to uniquely identify the set of
attribute items in coverage mp959.

The coverage was copied to COALMINES_PY2. As a result of the
UNION operation, each record had 132 items definitions in 33
groups of 4 (X1A, P1A, T1A, M1A ........ X11C, P11C, T11C,
M11C). However, most of these fields were blank; no single
record represented more than five unique mine index numbers.
An AML was created to reduce the items to the minimum necessary,
which was determined to be 5 groups of 4 items each.
Prior to running the AML the items had to be renamed to use
numbers for easier processing. Thus the items definition names
became: X11, P11, T11, M11 ......... X113, P113, T113, M113
respectively.

This is the AML that was used.

<overview>
<eaover>
Attribute items are in typical ARC/INFO feature class format.
Polygon attributes requiring further explanation are:

> M-INDEX(n) - Unique ISGS identification number assigned
> to each mine. A polygon can represent up to three mines because
> of overlapping mines in different seams or surface mining through
> shallow underground mines, or due to changing mine ownership and/or
> permit status over time.
>
> PIT(n) - Pit number. This is used to distinguish between
> different pits mined by a single surface mine or different seams
> mined by an underground mine. PITn is associated with M-INDEXn.
>
> TYPE(n) - Polygon code associated with M-INDEXn.
>           A - Unmined area between mines
> B - Indefinite mine boundary (surface mine)
>           H - Auger mine
>           K - Unmined area within a mine
>           L - Underground mine
>           M - Surface mine
> N - Indefinite mine boundary (underground mine)
> S - Abandoned surface mine or tipple
>           W - Abandoned slope
> (no value) - other unmined areas
>
> METHOD(n)  - Method of mining for M-INDEXn.  For a detailed
> description of these methods see: Bargh, M.H., C.G. Treworgy,
> G.K. Coats, 1993, Directory of Coal Mines in Illinois,
> 7.5-Minute Quadrangle
> Series, Springfield East Quadrangle, Sangamon County.
>           B - Blind room and pillar
>           C - Checkerboard room and pillar
>           H - High extraction retreat
>           L - Longwall
>           M - Modified room and pillar
> N - Modified room and pillar; some pillars pulled
> O - Room and pillar basic (irregular panels)
>           P - Room and pillar panel
> Q - Room and pillar panel; some pillars pulled
> R - Room and pillar; specific type unknown
> S - Room and pillar; some pillars pulled
>
> ACTIVE - Status of mine. Due to the nature of coal mining,
> active/inactive status of a mine may change frequently. These
> designations are current as of September 1, 1996.
>           1 - Active mine
>           0 - Inactive mine
>
> MINE - Concatenation of M-INDEX and PIT items.
> MINE2 - Concatenation of M-INDEX2 and PIT2 items.
> MINE3 - Concatenation of M-INDEX3 and PIT3 items.
> MINE4 - Concatenation of M-INDEX4 and PIT4 items.
> MINE5 - Concatenation of M-INDEX5 and PIT5 items.
>
> The active mines in this coverage are as follows:
>
> M-index Mine Name Company County Seam
> 702 Delta Cyprus Amax Williamson Herrin, Danville
> 992 Brushy Creek Brushy Creek Saline Herrin
>                        Coal Co.
> 995 Eagle Valley Coal Miners Gallatin Springfield, Davis
> 1001     Galatia       Kerr-McGee      Saline      Springfield, Herrin
> 1015 Big Ridge Arclar Saline Springfield
