<descript>
<abstract>
This data set identifies all coal mine permits
in Illinois as of May, 1998. Scale is 1:24,000.
</abstract>
<purpose>
To monitor compliance with land reclamation statutes
under Public Law 95-87, the 1977 Surface Mining Control
and Reclamation Act, permit boundaries were digitized
from mostly 1:4800 scale engineering maps of various
quality submitted by coal producers. Registration was
to known points on 1:24,000 7.5 min. USGS topo maps, the
reason for the nominal scale of 1:24,000. The permit
boundary is one of potentially five data layers for each
permit. This information is suitable for registration of
other material at similar scales. Polygon attribute data,
identifying permitted areas, are present. The individual
coverages were combined to produce the coverage coalprmt.
These data are appropriate for use in local and regional
thematic analysis. For this combined coverage, data are
not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base, due to
registration methods.

Permit boundaries are dynamic. The coverage is a

Because of the potential overlap of adjacent
permitted areas, this combined coverage may not always
reflect the specific boundary of individual permits.
