    Title:
    Surficial Geology of the Alton 7.5-minute Quadrangle (Illinois portion), Illinois - ISGS Digital Data Compilation - Expanded Version
    Abstract:
    This metadata file describes a compilation of digital data depicting the surficial geological units of the 7.5-minute Alton quadrangle in Illinois. The compilation is in the form of a downloadable zip file containing 81 data files in 5 folders, including the following information:

    (1) vector spatial data layers in ArcInfo and ArcView data formats for surficial geologic units and contacts, loess thickness contours, cross-section line locations, and data points for stratigraphic test holes, outcrops, ISGS field notes, water wells, and engineering borings;

    (2) raster data layers including the USGS DRG for the Alton quadrangle and a georeferenced TIFF image of the quadrangle portion of the final published map;

    (3) JPEG images of information from the final published map including all of the explanatory text, reference text, materials descriptions, lithostratigraphic units and interpretations, three photographs, two cross-sections, and two figures depicting clay and illite contents in the Glasford Formation;

    (4) metadata in several FGDC compliant formats for all spatial layers;

    (5) an ArcView project file (.apr) and associated legend files (.avl); and

    (6) a word processing document containing the map author's detailed notes regarding data points.

    The vector data include name and modifier for geologic unit, map symbol, a qualitative statement on the relative accuracy of the mapped location of unit boundaries, loess thickness contour values, clay content of the Glasford Formation, the percentage of illite in the clay mineral fraction of the Glasford, magnetic susceptibility, and the soil horizon sampled.

    Vector data are in the geographic coordinate system, decimal degrees, NAD83. Raster data are in the UTM coordinate system, zone 15, meters, NAD27.

    For a detailed list of the files included in the data product, see the Supplemental_Information section.

    The data were published in 1999 on an ISGS Illinois Geologic Quadrangle entitled Surficial Geology Map, Alton Quadrangle (Illinois Portion) Madison County, Illinois by David Grimley. The data in this compilation do not include all the information on the published map. Refer to the published map for a complete explanation of the Quaternary geology of the Alton quadrangle.

    The nominal scale is 1:24,000.

Why was the data set created?

This data compilation is intended to provide a regional overview of the extent of Quaternary geologic materials in the Alton quadrangle. The data are appropriate regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base, nor do they replace the need for detailed site-specific studies.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints: none
Use_Constraints:
Reproduction or redistribution of copyrighted digital data sets or products derived therefrom outside of licensee organization or entity is expressly forbidden. The only exception is redistribution to consultants working for the licensee, and then only for purposes, related to work for the licensee. Such consultants may not further reproduce or redistribute these data sets. None of these data shall be electronically duplicated on magnetic or optical media for use by others, in whole or in part, without the permission of DNR.

Any hardcopies utilizing DNR data sets shall clearly indicate their source. If the licensee has modified the data in any way they are obligated to describe the types of modifications they have performed on the hardcopy map. Licensee specifically agrees not to misrepresent DNR data sets, nor to imply that changes they made were approved by DNR.

These data are not to be used for commercial profit.

These data should not be used at scales greater than 1:24,000.

  2. What's the catalog number I need to order this data set?

  3. What legal disclaimers am I supposed to read?

    The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides these geographic data "as is." DNR makes no guarantee or warranty concerning the accuracy of information contained in the geographic data. DNR further makes no warranties, either expressed or implied as to any other matter whatsoever, including, without limitation, the condition of the product, or its fitness for any particular purpose. The burden for determining fitness for use lies entirely with the user. Although these data have been processed successfully on computers of DNR, no warranty, expressed or implied, is made by DNR regarding the use of these data on any other system, nor does the fact of distribution constitute or imply any such warranty.

    In no event shall the DNR have any liability whatsoever for payment of any consequential, incidental, indirect, special, or tort damages of any kind, including, but not limited to, any loss of profits arising out of use of or reliance on the geographic data or arising out of the delivery, installation, operation, or support by DNR.

  4. How can I download or order the data?

  5. What hardware or software do I need in order to use the data set?

    The GIS data can be used in any GIS software compatible with the ESRI shape file (.shp) or coverage export file (.e00) formats. Most Internet browsers and graphics software are compatible with the TIFF and JPEG image formats. Other digital files in the product are compatible with typical PC desktop software.

    It is assumed that those who wish to download, unzip and use these data are technically proficient in using the Internet, file zipping software, and GIS software. The ISGS will entertain questions about the data, but will not provide support of any kind in regard to the use of the Internet or any particular software package.
