<descript>
<abstract>
This is polygon data showing the mined extent of non-coal
underground mines in Illinois. These data were extracted
from the ISGS Coal database. Because there is no legal
filing requirement for non-coal mines in Illinois, these
data show only approximately 20% of the non-coal mines in the
state. Mine index numbers can be related to tabular mine
information maintained by the ISGS Coal Section. These data
are not actively maintained. A much more comprehensive
non-coal mine point data set is in preparation.
</abstract>
<purpose>
This data set was assembled as a subset of all underground mines
in Illinois to identify areas that may be subject to mine subsidence.
These data have a nominal scale of 1:24,000.

<attracc>
<attraccr>
Attributes in this coverage are accurate with respect to the
source data library. Contact the ISGS Coal Section for information
regarding the accuracy of the source data library. Note: A polygon
with CODE = 12 is also present with the database, but is probably
mis-coded.
</attraccr>
</attracc>
<logic>
Polygon and chain-node topology is present. The coverage was
checked for complete chain-node topology (no dangling arcs,
except where appropriate), polygon labels (one per polygon, except
for universal polygon), boundary values appropriate for map
projection and map units, and appropriate "fuzzy" tolerances.
There are no known arc or polygon attribute values outside
the appropriate value domains.
</logic>
<complete>
This data set does not represent a complete collection
of the location of mine shafts, slopes, and other openings.
Lines delineate the approximate outer boundary of
individual mines (if known) or general mined areas.
It is estimated that less than 20% of the non-coal
underground mines in Illinois are represented.
</complete>
<posacc>
<horizpa>
<horizpar>
Horizontal positional accuracy is verified by visual
comparison of source and hard copy plots. The source
materials used are commonly paper copies of original
mine maps or USGS 7.5' quadrangles. ISGS
staff have not verified the accuracy or validity of the
original source material. Some original maps are not
drawn on a cartographic base. Due to the physical and
cartographic quality of the source materials used,
horizontal positions may be in error by 500 feet or more.
For applications requiring precise horizontal accuracy,
the original source maps should be consulted.

This data set was created from digital data
maintained by the Coal section of the
Illinois State Geological Survey. The data is
separated into county-by county databases archived
on-line in /coal4/library.  If a non-coal polygon
coverage existed within a county database, it was
copied to a separate workspace. There were a total
of 15 counties with non-coal polygon coverages. The 15
individual coverages were combined into a single
coverage with the ARC/INFO APPEND command.

<overview>
<eaover>
Attribute items are in typical ARC/INFO feature class format.
Those requiring further explanation are:

> Polygon Attributes:
> INDEX - the mine index number, which can be used to
> relate to other tabular data that may exist
> in the ISGS Coal Section mine database.
>
> INDEX2 - Additional mine index number, if applicable.
> A mine may have two index numbers because of
> overlapping mines or surface mining through
> shallow underground mines, or due to changing
> mine ownership and/or status over time.
>
> CODE - code for source of digitized data
>          from ISGS Coal Section
> Valid CODEs within this database include:
>          0 - not a mine polygon
> (a donut polygon within a mine polygon)
> 1 - Original mine map with 4 registration points
> 2 - Original mine map, registered using landmarks
>          4 - Map with topography or scale > 1:24,000
> Note: A polygon with CODE - 12 is also present,
>                but is probably mis-coded.
