(Shift-Click to download documentation) Description: Abstract: This Arc/Info data set shows boundaries of 1 x 2 degree (1:250,000 nominal scale) quadrangles in Illinois. Polygon, arc and annotation feature classes are included. Each side of a quadrangle is composed of a single arc, subdivided into 5 arc segments of 1.5' each. There is a tic for each quadrangle corner. Boundaries and tics were generated with version 7.1.1 of the Arc/Info software from a file of decimal degree locations for each quadrangle corner, using the GENERATE command. These data are in a Lambert Conformal Conic projection and coordinate units are feet. Tabular data for quadrangle polygon include quadrangle name and USGS map designation code. Each quad is annotated with its name. Tabular data for the arcs include latitude or longitude in decimal degrees. Purpose: This data set was created to serve as base map information. Data are appropriate for use at a regional scale and are intended as a reference. Data are not appropriate as a geodetic or engineering base. Supplemental_Information: Updates to this edition: Tics and arcs have been regenerated. Tics have been added at every quadrangle corner. Vertices have been added to every arc at 1.5' intervals to reduce shape changes due to projection of the data. Annotation for the map name has been added. All character item values are now in upper case to conform with other data sets in this suite. Arcs are coded with latitude or longitude in decimal degrees. See process step entries dated March 1998 for more details. This data set is a subset of a master data set called QUADTILE that contains boundaries for all 7.5' quadrangles from 36 to 43 degrees north latitude and 87 to 92 west longitude. Arcs from QUADTILE can also be used to produce statewide base maps 15' (1:62,500 scale), 30' x 60' (1:100,000), and 1 degree x 2 degree (1:500,000) quadrangles. Regular use of these data, however, indicate attributes are accurate. Logical_Consistency_Report: A logical consistency review was performed in March, 1998. The following checks were made: Data set was DESCRIBED and coverage files listed to determine the feature types present. In this data set, the following feature types were found and checked: polygons, arcs, labels, nodes, and annotation. The presence of spatial indices was also checked. For PAT and AAT files, each ITEM was checked for the following: >- DOMAIN of allowable values >- adherence of values to the DOMAIN >- definition of ITEMS >- requirement of all UNIQUE values for an item >- logic of ITEMS REDEFINED over other ITEMS >- length of ITEM name as regards conversion to shape file BUILD statuses of data sets were checked, as were LABELERRORS and NODEERRORS (where appropriate), and PROJECTION definition. The presence of a BND file was verified. The presence and location of TICS were checked. Polygon and chain-node topology present. There are no dangling arcs. There is one polygon label per polygon, except for universe polygon. Boundary values appropriate for map projection and map units. "Fuzzy" tolerance is suitable for nominal scale. Some minor attribute errors were found and corrected. The annotation class existed but was empty. Annotation was added. All character item values are now in upper case to conform with other data sets in this suite. There are no attribute values outside the appropriate domains. Completeness_Report: All quadrangles that intersect the state of Illinois are included. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: These data are a mathematical construct and as such should have a high degree of positional accuracy. No review has been completed, however. There have been several instances where these boundaries have been used with other data digitized from USGS quadrangles with good results. Lineage: Process_Step: Process_Description: Boundaries were generated by version 5.0 of the ARC/INFO software from a file of degree minute second locations for each quadrangle corner, using the GENERATE command. Process_Date: 199403 Process_Step: Process_Description: Boundaries were regenerated by version 7.1.1 of the Arc/Info software from a file of decimal degree minute second locations for each quadrangle corner, using the GENERATE command. New tics were generated as well, one at each quad corner. Latitude and longitude values were assigned to the arcs in the generation process. The result was a parent coverage called QUADTILE. The data were projected to Lambert Conformal Conic. Arcs forming quadrangle boundaries for any 1 x 2 degree quadrangles intersecting Illinois were extracted to this data set. Arcs were UNSPLIT to produce a single arc for each side of a quadrangle. Polygon labels from edition 1.0 were retained. Annotation for each quad was added. Internal logical consistency checks were made as described in the logical consistency report. Differences between this edition (1.1) and the previous edition (1.0) are: Tics and arcs have been regenerated. Tics have been added at every quadrangle corner. Vertices have been added to every arc at 1.5' intervals to reduce shape changes due to projection of the data. All character item values are now in upper case to conform with other data sets in this suite. Arcs are coded with latitude or longitude in decimal degrees.
