Numbers of Aerial Photographs: The largest collections, having between 1000-5000 photos, are held by Division of Forest Resources, Division of Land Reclamation, and the Illinois State Geological Survey. Two collections have 500-1000 photos. The remaining 31 collections have fewer than 500 photos.
Collections: Most collections are organized by project. The largest collections are organized by county, other, and USGS Quadrangle. One collection is organized by coastline.
Date: The oldest photos are dated 1936. The most recent are 1997. Most collections include multiple dates of photography. Only the ISWS Flood Insurance Studies consist of photography of a single date.
Availability: Thirteen collections have existing procedures for viewing by the public. Other collections can be viewed by arrangement. All are for office use.
Type of Photos: Thirty-three collections contain B&W photos. Two contain color or color IR. Most collections consist of B&W 9" prints. Two contain 35-mm transparencies.
Repeat Coverage: Ten collections contain repeat coverage. Two contain annual coverage - Land Reclamation Division and Blasting and Explosives Division.
Loan Policy: None of the divisions will lend photography to the public. However, most will allow the public to view the photography on the premises. Divisions may lend photography to other government agencies.
Sale of Photography: Photography is offered for sale by the Division of Forestry Resources, Land Reclamation Division, and Blasting and Explosives Division.
Digital Imagery:
Two divisions have digital imagery for five of their collections.
This part of the inventory is known to be incomplete and the amount of
imagery is underrepresented. For example, statewide digital imagery was
compiled for at least two dates as used in the Land Cover Map of Illinois.
It is expected that omissions to this inventory will be added as the results
are circulated.
