Environmental Site Assessments Section Former Manufactured Gas Plant (FMGP)/Coal Tar Site GIS Project ![]() A large, mostly filled coal-gas gasometer located near Deering Street in Chicago in 1902 (person for size). These large, gas-filled, reservoirs or "gas holders" were collapsible like an accordian on railings and could extend into the subsurface as much as 80 feet. They were located in the vicinity of coal-gas works as well as elements of the gas distribution network to provide storage for continuous gas production and peak demand. Ater the invention and proliferation of the airplane, directions for pilots to local airports were often painted on their tops as a public service.
