Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) Database GIS Project

A Photograph of an Old Gas Station Site

Environmental Site Assessments Section mapping efforts in connection with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) LUST program database began early in 2003. The 22,839 site listings currently on this database are maintained by the IEPA and are currently being mapped by ESA Section staff in 11 of Illinois 102 counties. An accurate GIS point coverage of these leaking underground fuel tank sites will streamline ESA Section Preliminary Environmental Site Assessments work.

Since the majority of these sites, which are often located along Illinois highway networks, are typically gasoline stations, a simple point coverage was selected as the GIS medium. In the process of field-truthing these LUST sites, many corrections and updates to this well-used database are occurring. This ESA Section project has received considerable support and kudos for the interagency cooperation it exemplifies.
