Geophysics Section

Geophysics Section The Geophysics Section develops and uses new technology and applies existing methods and instruments to produce images of the upper 500 feet of the earth beneath Illinois. Geophysical logging, high-resolution seismic reflection, electrical earth resistivity, and two-dimensional resistivity are used to detect changes in the physical properties of the soil and rock below the surface so that large areas of unseen earth can be explored and interpreted. When used in conjunction with information gathered through shallow and deeper drilling, geophysical techniques can expand and refine what is known about an area's geology.
