Applying Geophysics for Society's Benefit

Knowledge about this upper portion of the subsurface is especially critical to understanding and finding solutions for society's environmental and engineering problems. The information gathered in these ways helps the geophysicists search for groundwater, map geologic formations such as buried valleys, and detect abandoned mines, faults, fractures, karst terrain, or other unusual features.
