Oil and Gas
Subject of Oil and Gas
The Illinois State Geological Survey aids industry exploration and development of petroleum and natural gas resources in Illinois. Staff scientists work to identify and map the distribution and structure of oil-producing geological units and to characterize the properties of oil reservoirs.
This structural information is used to develop and recommend improved methods to increase oil recovery from Illinois' mature oil fields and to improve and manage underground gas storage reservoirs. (Illinois' capacity for underground gas storage dwarfs all other states; daily gas deliverability from storage ranks fourth among the states.)
Interpreting and transferring geological information to oil and gas companies through workshops is an essential function of Survey staff.
