Live Seismometer Data Now Available Online

A live feed from the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) seismometer can now be viewed through our new online application (click on the tab above). The site shows the last 20 seconds of output in a zoomed-in scale, as well as a 30-minute medium scale and 10-hour zoomed-out scale. The trace is in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). For Central Standard Time, subtract 5 hours, or for Central Daylight Time, subtract 6 hours.
Earthquakes locally within the New Madrid Seismic Zone as well as larger earthquakes worldwide have been visible in the trace. Additionally, an interactive map plotting earthquake epicenters from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) is embedded in the page. The ISGS seismometer is located in the Natural Resources Building on the campus of the University of Illinois at latitude 40.1011°N and longitude 88.2290°W. This installation is designed for educational purposes and is not part of the national seismic network. The three-component seismometer was manufactured by Güralp Systems Ltd. (Reading, UK).
