Debris-rich basal ice and melt-out till, Aktineq Glacier

Location: E side of snout of Aktineq Glacier (B-17), Bylot Island, Nunavut, Canada, approximately 40 km WNW of Pond Inlet; 72° 53'N, 78° 55'W
Debris-rich basal ice and melt-out till, Aktineq Glacier

This debris-rich basal glacial ice at the snout of Aktineq Glacier is similar to that shown in image 0061, but in this case the glacier itself can be seen in the background, in the upper right-hand corner. This picture gives a better idea of the relationship of “fossil” ice stranded and preserved by an insulating cover of melt-out till to the retreating glacier front. Image 0138 is similarly situated to show that relationship.
