This is the general setting where Mr. Villakazie became entrapped in a subaqueous mudboil. The stony ridges projecting from the shore are the ribs of rib-and-trough structures (see image for explanation). The features are exposed because the lake level was lowered by over 1 meter, as is common in this area toward the end of the summer because of the arid conditions prevailing in summer and fall. He was probing to determine the contrasting thicknesses of the active layer beneath the ribs and the troughs, and the results of the work on this island are incorporated in Shilts and Dean, 1975.
