Frost wedge in marine clay in raised delta

This is a more distant view of the ice wedge shown in close-up in image 0064. The recent aggradation of the section, discussed in captions for 0065 and 0067, can be seen as a protruding, 75-100 cm-thick surface layer of windblown sand. The horizontal layers in the windblown sediment are buried plant layers representing periods of incipient soil formation. Note the infilling with dark sediment (probably by finely divided humic material) of the pre-aggradation depression over the ice wedge, which is located just to the right of the spray paint can. A firefighting pump is attached to the 1.5" hose, and this method was used to expose the sediments that form the section. The men who were working on the section are, from bottom to top, Wilfrid Podolak, Warren ?, and David Robertson.
