"A massive, generally wedge-shaped body with its apex pointing downward, composed of foliated or layered, vertically oriented, commonly white ice; from less than 10 cm to 3 m or more wide at the top, tapering to a feather edge at the apex at a depth of 1 to 10 m or more. Some ice wedges may extend downward as far as 25 m and may have shapes dissimilar from wedges (Brown and Kupsch, 1974)."
